The Star Ghost; Brad Strickland
Synopsis: This new illustrated Minstrel Books series, based on the hot TV show Deep Space Nine, follows the adventures of Jake Sisko, the 14-year-old son of Commander Benjamin Sisko, and Nog, nephew of Quark, everybody's favorite Ferengi, as they experience new friends, a new school--even a few ghost sightings
An Interview with Brad Strickland - by Amazon.com
Amazon.com: How did you begin writing? Did you intend to become an author, or do you have a specific reason or reasons for writing each book?
B.S.: I come from a large, extended Southern family of storytellers, and from my childhood I remember listening to my parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts spin yarns--some of them funny, some of them scary. I never "decided" to become an author, but just fell into it, because I always loved reading, hearing, and telling stories. When I was sixteen, I made up a ghost story that I thought was pretty good. At that time, ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE ran a "first story" in each issue, a story by a previously unpublished author. I thought, "Well, why not?" Borrowed my sister's typewriter, typed up the ghost story, sent it in, and several months later, the magazine sent me a check for the story. That was my start, but since then I've done all kinds of books. Generally now I send in an outline for a new book idea and sign a contract based on the outline. I've worked for Pocket Books (doing Star Trek and Nickelodeon titles), and I've been writing stories based on characters or outlines left behind by the late John Bellairs for about five years now. Still, each book is new--and when I begin one, I'm just as eager as any reader to see how it comes out.
Amazon.com: What authors do you like to read? What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?
B.S.: What authors DON'T I read? Ray Bradbury is an old and cherished favorite, as was John Bellairs. In sf, I love the works of Asimov, Brin, Card, Deitz--pretty much the whole alphabet, you see. The short stories of Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison always impress me. Just finished Berendt's MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL and was very impressed.
Amazon.com: Could you describe the mundane details of writing: How many hours a day do you devote to writing? Do you write a draft on paper or at a keyboard (typewriter or computer)? Do you have a favorite location or time of day (or night) for writing? What do you do to avoid -- or seek! -- distractions?
B.S.: When I'm actively working on a book or story, I generally try to do at least a thousand words a day. Sometimes that takes me thirty minutes, sometimes four hours. I do all my writing on a computer, and the hardest part is the first draft. I'm not one of those writers who puts it down one time--bam!--and it's perfect. I like revision and rewriting (lots of writers I know don't), and generally I write either early in the morning (five or six o'clock) or early in the evening (seven o'clock or so). I favor my office at home, but I've written on airplanes, in cars, in hotel rooms--a special place doesn't seem to matter. Distractions? I love doing research, and it's easy to lose myself in book research or in "live" research (like the time I explored a haunted opera house in John Bellairs' home town of Marshall, Michigan).
Amazon.com: Do you meet your readers at book signings, conventions or similar events? Do you interact with your readers electronically through email or other on-line forums?
B.S.: I often speak and sign at schools. I also attend sf and fantasy conventions, especially in the southeast. I don't usually interact much on on-line forums, because my fingers can't keep up with my mind, and I get all tangled up in syntax.
Amazon.com: When and how did you get started on the 'Net? Do you read any newsgroups, such as rec.arts.books and rec.arts.sf.written, mailing lists or other on-line forums? Do you use the 'Net for research -- or is it just another time sink? Are you able to communicate with other writers or people you work with over the 'Net?
B.S.: Got started on the 'Net about three or four years ago at the college where I teach. I read all sorts of newsgroups and do research online. I do a lot of in-house communication at school, and I correspond with a few friends across the nation by email.
Amazon.com: Feel free to use this space to write about whatever you wish: your family, your home town, hobbies, favorite places, where you've lived, where you went to school, what jobs you have had, your last (or planned) vacation, your favorite color/food/pet/song or movie, what books you'd take to a desert island, what you intend to do before you die, or what you think of just about anything.
B.S.: I've got a wonderful and supportive family: my wife (and occasional co-writer) Barbara, my son Jonathan, and my lovely and talented daughter Amy. I live about six or seven miles from the spot where I was born and am happy here. And I can't choose a favorite pet because we have so many--two dogs, a bunny, three cats, two ferrets, and probably something else creeping around the house.
